The Education Service Center, Region 2 (ESC-2), Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of our new Executive Director, Dr. Esperanza Zendejas. Dr. Zendejas will be assuming her new role as head of the ESC-2 on Wednesday, August 19, 2020. She succeeds Dr. Rick Alvarado who is retiring from the ESC-2 after 7 years as Executive Director, and a career in education spanning over 30 years.
“We are looking forward to Dr. Zendejas’ leadership and the breadth of educational experience she brings to our region. We thank Dr. Alvarado for his service to our ESC and wish him the best in his retirement,” says ESC-2 Board Chair, Luis Buentello.
Dr. Esperanza Zendejas brings a wealth of experience to the ESC-2 having served as a teacher, counselor, principal, and school superintendent. Dr. Zendejas is the former Superintendent of Brownsville ISD, and she is currently employed with San Benito CISD.
Dr. Zendejas is a graduate of Stanford University where she earned her Doctorate in Education degree. She holds a Master’s degree in counseling from the University of San Diego and a Bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University. She is the recipient of numerous national, state, and local education awards.
Dr. Zendejas is a storyteller, published author, playwright, and puppeteer. She is married to John Fox and together they have eight grandchildren.
The Education Service Center, Region 2, is one of 20 regional education service centers around the state of Texas, and serves 11 counties, 41 traditional local public school districts and 8 charter schools. The ESC-2 is a non-profit service organization established by the Texas Legislature to provide programs, services, and products to public schools to build capacity within their staff to improve student achievement and increase efficiency of their operations.
